I'm so grateful that a good portion of my life has been spent living in coastal towns. Among my favorites were the four years we lived in Carmel, California, and most recently, for the past few years, in Brookings, Oregon. My husband, Dan, and I love walking on the beach after a storm when the “confetti” from the sea is newly strewn. It seems the greatest gifts often surface after some kind of tempest retreats and dissipates. I've also enjoyed the many walks in life that I've shared with my sisters—(sibling, cousins, in-laws, and friends, as well.)
One such journey was with a “sister” at Lone Ranch, close to our home. Besides the huge rocks in and around the shore, there's lots of driftwood, shells, and tide pools. In “Beach In A Bottle,” I write of that magical shared moment: “Although strangers fifty years earlier, we were nothing less than sisters now, as we nimbly bent over all those small, teal universes which moved in silent, slow motion. And somewhere in between the perfect and the broken, we chose the colorful and charactered...”
In “Coastal Crowns,” you'll find oceanic inspirations, and yes, plenty of the “colorful and charactered.” Along with an array of shells—mother-of-pearl, abalone, dentilia, silver mouth, and heishi, there are lucent stones, such as agates, jades, chalcedony, topaz, and peridots. Look for the swirls of ocean jasper, the breaking waves of larimar, and the deep blue in Peruvian opals. Sterling chains, Silver Art Clay, and sometimes a froth of 22 or 24 karat gold, completes the vision of these handcrafted one-of-a-kind creations.
“Coastal Crowns” is a tribute to the walks we take in life with someone special—or even alone. It's a reminder that, like the seashore after a storm, there is beauty right at our feet to take with us as we journey. After all, it's frequently the tempestuous that reveals those hidden treasures.
